A meeting was called by the Colonial office on
23 July to discuss 0.0.0. British troops in China'a telegram

20 July attached. Colonial Office (Mr. Gent),
Foreign Office (Mr. Sterndale Bennett), D.C.A. (Lt.Col. Tylor
and D.M.O. (Lt.Col. Nangle) were represented.
2. After discussion it was greed that the problem
of dealing with the reoccupation of HONG KONG conld be
divided into two parts -
(a)
(b)
To ensure that British ‹dministration
personnel accompanied any Sino-Americ. n forces
if they attacked or occupied the Colony.
To forestall any trregular or commnist
occupation in the event of the Japanese evacuating
the Colony.
3. To deal with 2(a) 1t ws Egreed that the Colonial
office in consultation with the Foreign Office should art
telegram to TERMINAL for the consideration of the Secretary
of State for the Colonies 8king that the ine Ministar shoul
clear the matter with President Temen so that we shouîâ

should be approched to nominɛter -loce und time for the
Lssembly of & C... unit in Ching.

4. To deal with 2(b) it was agreed that the Colonial
Office should consider elternative plans not involving the
use of British military forces in Chine either for the plan or
for cover.
5. · It is now understood that the Coloni. 1 a. of S. has
decided to take up with the Prime Minister the proposal în
baragraph 3, if the S. of 7. for Foreign Affairs and the 3. d
3. for ur concur, during the Prime Minister's visit to
England this week.

The C.A. Directorate will keep the Ver Office
informed on developments in this matter.
